Stop and Smell the Roses
– Romans 8:28 (NIV)
A few weeks ago, I learned something new about my husband. We will be celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary this coming weekend and I’m still learning new things about his likes and dislikes. Well, this one nearly blew me away because he has ALWAYS showered me with fresh bouquets of flowers – not just for special occasions, but ALL the time!
Well, I met him for lunch and was telling him that I had planted two rose bushes that I had recently purchased for our home. He informed me that he didn’t like rose bushes. Why? Because of the thorns. Yes, I don’t like the thorns either, but I LOVE roses. I think they are the sweetest smelling flower and their petals are so soft and vibrant with color.
After our conversation, I began to think about how a rose bush is much like life – even though we don’t want to and we don’t like it, we have to deal with thorns. “Thorns” of life come in the form of sadness, rejection, heartache, loss, and disappointments. However, in the midst of the thorns, we have moments of celebrations, moments that we must cherish such as success at school or work, spiritual breakthroughs, birth, friendship and love. Those special moments and blessings are the roses of life!
Despite the “thorns” that we endure, we must have faith to know that it’s all working for our good. Appreciate the blessings – the “roses” that are there in the midst of our circumstances (the “thorns’). Take time to stop and smell the roses and focus on the positives in your life!!
ACTION ITEM: Sometimes we become so consumed with the negative “thorns”, that we forget just how very blessed we really are. Take a moment, download this free printable and complete the I’m Blessed! exercise.
