Recently, my husband and I enjoyed a nice escape to Lake Wallenpaupack in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. There is something about the mountains and water that always brings peace to my spirit.
As I looked out at the peaceful water, I thought about the peace that Jesus gives to us. Even though the water at Lake Wallenpaupack was beautiful and calming to look at, it is nothing compared to the living water that Jesus promised to us. Jesus promised us living water that gives us everlasting life.
In John 4, Jesus visited the city of Samaria. He was resting at a well, when a woman came up to draw water. Jesus said to her,
“If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” – John 4:10-14
I can only imagine the internal turmoil this woman was dealing with, having been through multiple marriages and having an adulterous affair. I’m sure she was desperately looking for a way to fill an emptiness and void inside of her. That day, at the well, she found it in Jesus Christ and His promise of Living Water.
His promise of Living Water still exists today. Even though He left this earthly place, He sent a Comforter – the Holy Spirit – to give us peace.
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:26-27
I am so grateful for that promise of peace that Jesus has given to me. Even when things seem chaotic or my heart is a little heavy, all I have to do is think about my Savior – how He cares for me and how He promises to never leave me, and my peace is restored.
